The Pocket Ranch is a very healthy ranch and home to all types of wildlife. Water availability and quality is of great importance to a healthy environment. The ranch consists of 24 named springs, 30 active ponds plus numerous seeps throughout. Butte Creek runs through the ranch and is a healthy perennial fish bearing stream that has a large hatch of stoneflies during the spring and early summer. Stone Flies are an indicator of a healthy stream according to Wikepedia "all species of stone flies are intolerant of water pollution and their presence in a stream or still water is usually an indicator of good or excellent water quality." This ranch is also a wildlife corridor from Hells Canyon National Recreation Area and the Rugged Wallowa Mountains."A wildlife corridor is a link of wildlife habitat, generally native vegetation which joins two or more larger areas of similar wildlife habitat.  Corridors are critical for maintenance of ecological processes, including allowing for the movement of animals and the continuation of viable populations."  wildlife corridors of the Pocket Ranch are reasonably free of interior fencing.
